about

I discovered that by tying a string around the A note on the regulator, and stopping all but the bass and A drones, I could mimic the sound of highland pipes. I’ve always loved tunes that occupy a single octave (or close to it) and especially love the slower martial feel of 6/8 marches. I’m not sure where I first heard the term jig-march, but I like using it to describe this type of tune. The tune is a version of Langstern or Langstrom’s Pony found in O’Farrell’s Vol 1, pg 32, and it clearly was intended for the big pipes.

about

Nicolas Brown Ferndale, Michigan

Born in Illinois and raised in Ontario, Nicolas started playing Irish music in his late teens. He was lent a practice set of uilleann pipes and given two CDs: one of Willie Clancy and one of Seamus Ennis. He listened to these on repeat for the next year before he eventually got his own set of pipes and a flute (and some more CDs!) and set out on his journey down the Irish music rabbit hole. ... more
