about

This first reel is found in O’Farrell’s Vol 3, pg 67. It’s unlikely it was actually a reel originally, as it’s printed in 2/4 and each bar in reel time is two bars on the page. The second reel is also in O’Farrells, Vol 4, pg 82, and while it’s also written in 2/4, this tune is much closer in form to a reel. It shares similarities with The Town of Ballybay, which is played as a reel, Newfoundland single, and song today. The last reel comes from Aird’s Vol 4, #61. It’s a great tune, and a pity it isn’t more commonly known.

about

Nicolas Brown Ferndale, Michigan

Born in Illinois and raised in Ontario, Nicolas started playing Irish music in his late teens. He was lent a practice set of uilleann pipes and given two CDs: one of Willie Clancy and one of Seamus Ennis. He listened to these on repeat for the next year before he eventually got his own set of pipes and a flute (and some more CDs!) and set out on his journey down the Irish music rabbit hole. ... more
